How long does it really take to get the hang of using Photoshop?
I'm really new to the whole graphics editing scene, I'm willing to learn it's just I really hate watching endless youtube tutorials I never find the right teacher.
Soon, I will be starting college for film and media and in some occasions I've found myself struggling to create images for various film projects.
Even now, I started a new youtube page and I'm even struggling to make myself a youtube background I'm hopeless! If you have any links or advice to good tutorial series on youtube or on forums please let me know I'd appreciate it.

Welcome to the forum.
The long and short is that few can hope to master all/most of Photoshop and instead choose to specialise in what grabs them.

I agree, a year for the basics and a lifetime to master sounds about right! Though I'm not sure I'm going to master every feature in my own lifetime!
Maybe I'm old school, but I learn the most from books and use the web to clarify something or provide further detail. I find that there's lots of good stuff on the net but it's hard to know what to look for until you have that 'mental map'. I can recommend
- Adobe's "Photoshop CS5 Classroom in a Book" is a good starter
- Deke McLelland's "CS5 One on One" provides more meat and detail
- Steve Caplin's "How to Cheat in Photoshop" is a lot of fun
Oh, and "Photoshop creative" magazine is great, and has good tutorials. Those Brits have ALL the good magazines. Cost me a fortune over here...
I can understand the initial frustration with Photoshop, but stick with it, it gets very rewarding. Best of luck. |

7 years of doing it on my own and 2 years of training by people who had the benefit of being born much earlier than me.

Hey, my latest delivery from Amazon (don't ask) included "Photoshop CS5 for Dummies" (the one by Peter Bauer). It's quite good. If you're only going to get one book to learn from, I'd get that one because it's got a good overview and simple explanations. |

I measure pieces of string for a living Mr Hermit.
This is the only time being taught will make a string shorter.
Regular lessons to learn the application in its entirety from a teacher will be faster than self tuition. |

Welcome to the Booming Industry. It takes time to learn Photoshoop. I would suggest you to learn the basics like how to resize, crop, change the layout, adding two photos together etc. once you know the basics, you can go to advance level, look for some good curses online, you tube videos help a lot though.. Good Luck

It's neither hard nor time consuming to learn how to use each of Photoshop tools, however, there's endless of things to learn after you do that, I suggest you read a simple and easy-to-understand book, then start following tutorials around the web, and more importantly, do some works yourself every now and then, you will find you're getting better and better as time pass.

I'm learning Photoshop from video tutorials online at a website whose URL I am hesitant to post in case my post is removed. :-)
Try Googling for "lynda video tutorials" and it'll be the first hit, though.
There's a wide range of courses available, including varying levels of Photoshop expertise.
