Hello, Everyone,
Whenever I try to open a file with ANY graphics suffix (psd, tif, jpg, etc.) OR save a dummy file I've created without opening a file, I receive the following message in the Windows version of Photoshop CS3:
"Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory."
I went to the "official" Photoshop forums at adobe.com and was astounded / amused to see the huge variety of responses as to why this might be happening. People were told to reinstall WinXP, reinstall Photoshop, enable OpenGL, disable OpenGL, reset the Preferences in Photoshop, check for hardware problems (well, I did do that,) everything but put a chicken in a paper sack and chant verses from the Bhagavad Gita while twirling the bag over one's head!
I'm STILL running WinXP Home, SP3. It works well for me. I f there's a problem there, I'll just burn my copy of PhotoShop.
I have made NO changes to my system or setup and have opened files into Photoshop hundreds of times from different locations on my HD before this "memory error" message appeared.
When I used to have an Adobe service contract, the recurring solution to almost any problem was to UPGRADE.
So, experienced fellow Photoshoppers...anyone had this message themselves AND resolved it ?? (most people on the Adobe forum seemed to have just dealt with it hypothetically or knew someone who said they once had this problem.) Thank you very, very much for any help you may provide. Have you tried putting a chicken in a bag and reciting the Bhagavad Gita, if that doesn't work try it backwards.
I don't have any inspiration for you, but as Auieos mentioned it could be a scratch disk issue, read THIS you could also try increasing the paging file size, to increase your paging file:
In the Control-Panel, select the
System icon:
(or right-click "My Computer" on the desktop
and select Properties)
Select the tab: "Advanced" and then
use in the section "Performance"
the button "Settings"
In the Window "Performance Options",
use the tab : "Advanced"
In the section "Virtual Memory",
the system shows the total size
of the Paging file, which you can
increase with the "Change" button.
Finally the old 'reset your preferences' and update Photoshop to the latest build available for your version. _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade!

Hello Auieos and thehermit,
I want to thank you both for taking the time to address my concerns. You have provided much food for thought and perhaps a solution or two.
My scratch disk is on a separate internal hard drive with 146GB of free space. The error message pops up whenever I try to do a regular save, that is save a file as a .psd, .tif or .jpg image. I have never used PS for web work. And, I have created a "new" untitled document within Photoshop, used the text tool a bit, and then tried to save the file. Same error message came up.
I will try your suggestions / respond in more detail over the coming weekend.
