I'm trying to determine what we're looking at before knowing how to critique it.

Is this a photograph and then re-touched/effects to give it this style?

Yes and no Dumpling-Boy. There is obviously post production work done, but the critique is on the image as a whole, so lighting, etc...

sorry, I don't mean to be difficult or anything. It's just that I need to know if I'm critiquing a photograph or a digital painting, you know? I would obviously look at it in two totally different ways.

That said, it appears as if it started off as a photograph and then a lot of post-editing has been applied.

My only critique would be to remove a lot of the shadows, especially on the left side of the image- it's as if it's creating an uncomfortable effect on my eyes for some reason (seriously lol!) There isn't enough room for the eye to move around the whole image comfortably.

If the left side of the picture could be brightened up considerably (show the hair for example), this would be great!!!

I hadn't realised you had thought it may not be a photograph Dumpling-Boy.

I had issues with the photo and resolved them in my mind, now I perversely think this image is going places. I would nominate the artist without hesitation for aplomb. I have revisited this image at least 15 times and more in my minds eye and each time I like it more. I still think it has the touch of the Dutch masters. (Vermeer?)

And you are not being difficult, the OP asked for critique, you are reasonably allowed to express your opinion as am I. We are not right, it's just an opinion that was solicited. :)

I think the photo is fantastic. I think it really conveys a certain sense of antiquity. I think that a person almost needs to look at it as sort of a period piece. In that respect I find it quite nice!
