Good day!

Usually I can Google this kind of thing quickly, but this one has me stumped. Does anybody know what technique is used to produce the really rich colors that seem to be becoming more popular in web and iPhone development lately? For example, the wood grain in the background for this almost has a rich shimmer to it: http://www.timmyme.com/

I've also seen it in many applications like these, where I can't tell if the art is computer generated or simple a photograph that was manipulated:

Thanks in advance for the help!
