I use a Canon 40D and a Canon 5D MrkIII. More so than your camera is your lighting and your glass. I've heard Nikon is good but never used one and know the Sensor capabilities for Iso in low light is better. Canons for me though are dependable and great all around cameras. If you go with a Canon I'm sure you could get a decent Rebel with what your looking for. I know 60D are around that range of price as well.

A lot of people say, nikon is better than canon when it comes to dslr while canon is better off for digicams only. So, better go to nikon, but for me. Its not really the camera that gives a great shot, its the person behind it.

Im professional photographer and I use Nikon. That said, it doesnt matter. Canon and Nikon will work out well for you. The other commenters are correct when they say that the lens is more important, but Nikon lenses are just as good as Canon lenses. the problem is, you get what you pay for, when it comes to lenses.

i would fully endorse the idea of getting a used DSLR. All of my work cameras were purchased used (most of the lenses too, in fact)

in short, with these two companies, dont sweat it. you'll be happy either way

I'm using a Nikon D90, so far so good and easy to use for both manual and auto mode. I used to have non-DSLR for both Canon and Nikon, the Canon did perform better (for the similar price range).

I agree with chris1999.

There is very little to choose between Canon and Nikon.
I have had both and they are good quality cameras.

Check out CNet, they usually have decent reviews:

Just jumping in if still of any help, even if it looks this is an old thread. I would make an effort and get a Nikon D90. If not possible at all then Nikon D5000 should be fine as well.

I personally use cannon EOS Rebel XSi EF-S, it's cheaper and i am comfortable with it :) i would recommend you to go for a cannon as it's cheaper and better compared to Nikon
