In CS5, edit-preferences-type-font preview size.

The font preview sample feature wasn't available until CS2 version.

In older versions, I used to type a few characters, then highlight them and click on the font select dropdown to highlight a font. At that point you can use the mouse wheel to scroll through the fonts rapidly....your text will change to match the selected fonts as you scroll through them.

Your very welcome. For what its worth, I used that same procedure when applying effects. Not sure whether to use overlay mode or soft light mode, etc? Once you select a mode you can use the mousewheel to quickly scroll through all of them and see the result without guessing.
