ok so i'm trying to blur the background of an object but magnetic lasso tool is not an option because the colors are too alike and it can't seem to identify the subject, i also cant use the regular lasso tool because of the horribly unsteady hands i have; any tips on what i can/should do?

The pen tool would work best, it is infinately adjustable.

If you're serious about Photoshop you really need to get a pen tablet. Wacom is the industry leader.

Agree 100% about the tablet - they're great!

Unfortunately, blurring a background is not as simple as select-and-blur. You have to do it like this: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1006&message=23239450

Thank You. Have been playing around with this for a while but could not get it right. Your reference helped.

You also can get some plugins that allow you to do this effectively.
Bokeh from AlienSKin for instance is one of the best.

Btw, bokeh is the photographic term of what you want to achieve Big Wink

You could do it using content aware scale (seems I'm on a theme) , enlarge slightly using content aware scale, protect the content with a quickmask if necessary, add your blur effect and then re-size again with content aware.

Pen tool is the only way to go. Call me old school, but pen is the ONLY way to get high quality works.

Also another tip: zoom to AT LEAST 300% when you are working on hatching the images.

also u might to keep the radius when u select at 0.5. 0 is too sharp and fake.
