I've been trying to design a new logo for a local news network, YNN, and I realized I have no idea how to make it good. I've made lots of logos since I started designing. Some of them are very pretty, but none of them would be considered "good" by a logo critic. None of them have clever and meaningful design elements.
I've been playing around with this logo for a long time now, trying to make it interesting, and it's just not happening. I think my best version is the one posted below. It's a long strip of paper folded up to form the letters "YNN". I think it looks decent enough, but it has nothing to do with news. It could just as easily be a logo for a grocery chain, or a pornographic film studio.
The CNN logo for comparison is not only very elegant, it also has a hidden image of a cable running through the center of it. That particular logo was designed in 2 hours. Obviously whoever designed it has a very creative and open mind.
How do I get there? How do I get to the point where I can build hidden symbols into my work? Even with endless hours available to me, I can't figure it out.

"Your". They wanted something general since they're reusing the branding for multiple stations across upstate ny. |
