I have recently started using Photoshop CS4 and have started using Raw files. However, when I open the files in CS4, they open in a different window to begin with from where you can make adjustments before continuing to open in the main Photoshop programme.

Whilst I do not understand the reason for this, my main question is related to the default alterations made to the image in this initial window. For some reason, the colours of the images (compared to when I open the jpeg files) are made much flatter, and generally a little over exposed.

I have tried everything I can in the settings of this initial opening window, but I cannot get the image to open in it's true colours.

Please can someone tell me what to do?

Thanks
Chris

When you shoot jpg the files are processed in the camera. Sharpening, contrast, white balance, exposure, are set in camera, before you download the pictures.

A raw file, is unprocessed. Some people refer to raw files as digital negatives. You need to do the processing with software after you download them.

Raw files allow you much more latitude with the processing, and that's where Adobe Camera Raw comes into play.

If you don't understand raw, you're likely better off just shooting jpg, at least for now.

Thanks Hawkeye
That makes sense.

I really want to crack using raw files as it opens up so much more possibilities that I'm eager to play with, particularly maximising detail in both highlights and dark areas.

Thanks again

You're welcome, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.
