|
|
I open the raw file in ACR and open as a smart object. Once open in PS, I apply my filters (noise, usm hp, HnS, etc). Before I used individual layers and progressively applied the filters to another layer, but I could mask each one. For example, I could soften a whole image, and mask out the eyes. The next layer I could sharpen the eyes. The next layer, I could remove out noise, and mask around what didn't need it. .... With layers, I can selectively mask each filter. Can I do this somehow with smart objects?
Q2:
If I dupe the layer, all the smart filters come with it. How can I flatten just that dupe layer? or have a new layer with the smart filters applied?
Thanks,

You have to use nested smart filters. Dbl-click the smart filter icon in the layers palette. In the new window convert the layer into a smart object.
Now add the you want filter and use the mask as you wish. When you're done click file/save (same place and file name as original), it will update the original.
You can go back any time to this nested smart object and change it or the mask, then save it again to update the original. If you close the nested filter, dbl-click the smart object icon again to open it. |

Ok, for me dbl clicking on the Smart filters did nothing, but dbl clicking on the smart object opens it up as you said. Right on!! This can only be done 1 time... I mean you can re-edit that file, but you cannot have multiple nested smart objects at the same level... right? I see that I can nest them down on the same leg, so to speak, but can I create another leg?
Thanks for the tip!!!! |

I should have said dbl-click the smart object icon...
You can nest as many as you like. Dbl-clicking the icon on the first nested smart object will allow you to add another, and so on. |

Cool, but they're all on the same leg, so to speak. Can I start another leg somehow?
Thanks again! |

I'm not completely certain what you mean by leg, but:
I always leave the background layer intact, and make a copy of the BG to convert to a smart object. That way I can make more copies later of the BG or parts thereof without the filters attached. You can then turn them into smart objects if you wish.
It also allows you to see the effects on the original when you turn off the other layers. |

Ok, all great tips that I have never seen before. Here's something weird, if I shft open from ACR, it opens as a smart object. I can go back to ACR at any time.. very cool. However, when I dbl clk the smart object, instead of nesting the smart objects, it opens in ACR. Any way of opening as a smart obj from ACR, and then nesting the smart objs?
Thanks! |
