I've been wondering what other people set their optimization settings for jpg and gif... to get the best quality at the lowest file size.
I usually set GIF to 16 colors no dither, with transparency ON.
JPG quality Medium (45)
How about you guys?

I always save thumbnails or other images placed on a webpage as a GIF because of the smaller size and usually around the same quality. When I do that I use the default "GIF 128 Dithered". In some cases I play around with the settings but as most of my thumbnails are in-game screenshots the default 128 Dithered setting works fine.
Not sure why I never optimize my JPG files. I do always save them at a Quality of 10.

GIFs
I use 32 or 64 color usually, but will go down to 16 or 8 or even 4 if the picture allows. I avoid dithering if possible, but if the image contains many gradients, pattern diffusion is the best.
JPG
If the image has lots of red, I may end up going with the preset JPG High (60) but usually try the image at medium (30) before bumping it up to 45.
In short, I optimize the settings to my image, not the image to my settings. That's why the save-for-web dialog gives you three preview panes: so you can compare various settings.

Yeah I'm with toni... if it's got any text in it, usually I have to use 70-80.
If it's a good quality image that I need to keep "perfect" I use 90-95 (can hardly tell the difference from 100%)
And if it's an ordinary photo, usually you can get away with 50-60%

Gif 128 Dithered (default).
JPEG 45-55 seems to work pretty good for most images without too much type.

Lotta people here seem to use 128 color GIFs.
Just my opinion, but most of the time that's too many. 64 should suffice for most gif-worthy images.

I find Fireworks MX to be a better tool for optimizing any graphics I create.
I work pretty much hand-and-hand with Photoshop and MX. I start almost every design I make in MX, then export into Photoshop to create all of my effects, then back into MX to optimize.
Just a personal preference.
