Why can't I save a tiff as a jpeg?

I have processed an HDR image in Photomatix and saved as a "tonemapped tiff" but when opening in Photoshop I can't re save as a jpeg. Why is that?

Is your image mode set to bitmap? Photoshop can't save bitmap images to jpg.
