I put too much stuff on a single layer when I was nearly done, got distracted and when I went to use brush presets on the layer I wasn't thinking and put one too many on it.

Is there any way I can remove the brush effects from that layer without deleting it?

Try using history, it will allow you to go back to a point prior to the mistake.
