large print resolution

I am putting together a collage of photos using several layers. The main canvas size will be 16x20 with several smaller prints. I added the smaller prints using the "place" option from the File menu. However, when I print the final poster, the prints are not in there maximum resolution. The ppi indicates that the maximum for the size is 96dpi. How can I maintain the maximum resolution of the smaller prints so that they come out in a higher resolution? Thx
