I'm hoping someone can help me explain why when I merge a certain type of Preset Style (effect) with the layers below, or try to save the file as a jpg, the effect disappears. I created a graphic with a sort of gold filigree style applied to a 50% grey pattern fill layer. I've merged all the other layers except the Style layer to make sure it doesn't have anything to do with any blending modes in layers below. The Sytle includes a drop shadow, inner glow, inner shadow, bevel and emboss, pattern overlay, gradient overlay, colour overlay, and stoke. The highlights and 3-D effect disappear when I flatten the image or try posting it on the web.

Interestingly enough, when I do a Snippit screen capture of the psd file, the highlights and 3-D effect are preserved. So I was able to attach a Snippit capture to show what the effect looks like when the Style is preserved as a separate layer, and what it looks like when saved as a jpg.

If anyone can explain the mystery, I'd love to hear from you.

The order of the layers can alter the way an image looks when flattened. Try changing the layer order or merging down layers prior to flattening.

Thanks Hawkeye. I've merged all other layers and just have the style layer above the composite background layer. The preset Style was applied to shapes filled with 50% grey and the blending mode is set to normal. There's nothing else on the layer.

The plot thickens: I tried experimenting with other Styles and found that the same thing happens with any Style that includes bright highlights. If you create a document with a solid black background, add a shape on a new layer, then apply a preset Style like the "Overspray (text)" Style that has shipped with all recent versions of Photoshop, and then merge the two layers, the effect will change and some of the highlights will disappear. The same thing happens if you convert the layer to a smart object.

Any ideas as to a work-around that might prevent this from happening?
