Hi all,

I'm possibly showing my ignorance here but this is what I'm trying to do. I want to change the colour balance of a part of the image, using an adjustment layer. So I select new adjustment layer/colour balance. It pops up with the usual dialog box but there seems no way of applying it to just a selected part of the image. If I close that dialog box, make a selection and then go to image/adjustments the colour balance is greyed out. This seems to defeat the whole object of an adjustment layer, so what am I doing wrong?

Regards

John

1. Make the color balance adjustment as you described, to alter the part of the image that you want altered (even though the rest of the image is also affected).

2. Close the dialog box and invert the mask (Ctrl+I).

3. Paint with white on the mask where you want to apply the color balance.

I hate to poke my nose in here, but if you are going to"image>adjustments" you are not using an adjustment layer. Make your selection first and then open an adjustment layer in the way you have described ( layer>new adjustment layer>color balance) or by clicking the two-toned icon at the bottom of the layers palette. The selection"marching ants" will disappear, but as you make your adjustments the selected bit will be affected so that you can see what you are doing. Strictly speaking, it is best not to use "image>adjustments" anyway, as it destroys information and doesn't allow you to tweak settings the way an adjustment layer does.
