Either use the magic wand usually set to 32 in tolerance. or use the magnetic lasso tool to make your selection.
I prefer theese methods over mask pro any day, but it varies which of them are best after what kind of image your are trying to cut something out of.

You could also try the background erase tool
Or the magic erase tool
Both are located in the eraser tool

If you post a picture, I could probably tell you what masking process would work best. No slight to other suggestions but the magic wand tool is best left, unless the background/foreground is vastly contrasting.
