Does anyone have any idea why I am unable to use the Automate option in the File menu. I am trying to make a contact sheet, but The Automate option is grayed out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What do you need to automate? What do you mean by contact sheet? How is your .psd set up so far? Your question is very broad.

I have a lot of pictures on discs and I need to print contact sheets of the pictures. This means like 24-36 pics per page. I was told the best way to do this myself is in photoshop using the file menu, automate, then contact sheet II option. It is just that "automate" is grayed out, and I am unable to get to othe contact sheet option. Does that help? I hope so, because I would love to figure this out. I didn't really understand your question about how my .psd is set up though.

Oh ok, I get it now. That's odd because I can't seem to get my Automate to be gray in any circumstances... You should always be able to get to it. Try doing it with a file already open instead of no documents open at all.
