The color replace tool is convenient, but I can't get it to replace a color with transparency (rather than another color). Is this possible or do I have to use a different technique?

Here's a portion of one of the images I'm using (the final will be .png with hacks to make it work with Internet Explorer -- I'm trying to make the light part varying degrees of transparent

I don't fully understnad what you're trying to accomplish. Are you trying to add more of the color or change the color?

Neither; I'm trying to make all of the image but the black-ish lines transparent. I don't want to just select everything but the lines and delete it because (1) it'll take forever (there's too much detail) and (2) it'll look crappy; I want the transparency to be gradiated, like the beige-ness is now.

Alright. I haven't used masks before (sorry; maybe I should have posted this in the beginners forum); I'm figuring it out, sort of, but having a bit of trouble. Could you give more details?

couldn't you just change the opacity of the image's layer?

Since your using png I'm guessing you'll be using it for it's variable opacity support. All you'd have to do then is on a new transparent layer outline the places you want to be darker, merge and voila..
