I want to take a photograph and have it go from transparent to solid opacity. I believe the gradient tool can do that (maybe) but I don't want any color, just have the transparent blend to solid. Help would be greatly appreciated. SZ

Hi there
Make sure you've got a transparent layer beneath the image (it's particularly important that the photograph isn't the background layer in the layers palette). Then select the gradient tool and from the options bar, click once on the gradient preview. This should open up the gradients toolbox, go ahead and choose forground to transparent. Now set your foreground colour to black and add a layer mask to the image (Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All). Now select the layer mask and drag the gradient tool over your image. If things don't look right then hit CTRL Z to undo, and then try again!
Hope this helps

I second what mattyboy777 said. Your going to have to go to the gradient options and instead of choosing a color, you'll have to set it to transparent. This is what a black to transparent gradient would look like if newbies are having any sort of trouble:

The "checkered" type pattern represents transparency.
