hi there, I'm totally new to photoshop and to this forum. I'm hoping that I can get some advice on some photographs I have taken for our website. The image itself is of a hair piece, and it's proving to be a) difficult to take b) difficult to do anything with i.e. background removal etc. I am hoping someone on here can tell me the best way to achieve the best professional shot of this image - I have hundreds to take so quick is good :)

The hi-res version is here (appx 2mb):

lowres here:

Thanks

A combination of magic wand tool (w) and rectangle marquee tool(m) with additive selecting (hold shift key) will do what I think you are trying to do.

but you never really said what you are trying to do. you might want to clear that up first

Hi kireol

Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to remove the background from the pictures, but with wisps of hair it's proving difficult.

That can be one of the more pain taking things to do. If I was going to do crop hair or fur I might use channels for that. If you have lots of pictures you need to crop you could use the channel method along with some of the steps done in actions to speed things up.

to see how to use channels for this kind of thing go to: http://www.planetphotoshop.com/select-hair-by-using-channels.html

I think this is a tutorial for that.

There is a program/plug in for that. I think it is call MaskPro or something like that. However you CAN do it in PS too.

I would not photo it using a towel...a smooth surface is better.

Have you tried the Extract filter?

Along with using a better background than a towel, I would suggest moving whatever you are shooting away from the background. When the object is close to the background it casts shadows and the edges of the object can pick up the background color. Both of which make it much harder to extract.
