Hi there. and welcome
Well.. here is my method. maybe not the best
1. create a canvas of suitable size
2. use the gradient tool, choose the colours and apply
- alternatively -
go to blending options and gradient overlay. select the settings and apply.
if you have a blank layer, you may need to just apply a solid fill to get the gradient to show up
umm.. i hope thats helpful and correct . _________________ .: Pixel Surgeon |

Ah...didnt know it was that easy. Thanks.
But if I create an image size of 1024x768 and add another layer and add a rectangle of 160x600 to the new layer (it seems we cant set a layer's dimension, sets it to default of the image size), how can I use that gradient tool for that rectangle only ? _________________ Anjanesh |

Glad i could help
once again.. two possiblilities.
1) use the marque tool and draw a box around the bit you want to apply gradient to
2) use gradient tool and apply to area inside marque selection
-OR-
A) check that there is nothing else in the layer
B) go to blending options and gradient overlay
note: any additions to a layer with gradient overlay will have gradient applied
good luck and happy photoshopping _________________ .: Pixel Surgeon |

or ctrl click or cmnd click the layer with the smaller box... this will place a selection around your smaller box, this will allow you to apply the gradient to the selected area! |
