I have recently taken over maintenance of a website and need to add more thumbnails that have an "edge" effect on them. Can anyone tell me how to achieve this effect?

This might not be much help, but I do it with Extensis Photo tools, a plug in I happen to have with my Photoshop. It has a bevel and emboss tool in...what you show there looks like a straight bevel.
It's easy to use and also includes a text tool that allows you to type in words in any font or dingbat you have in your font folder...then apply embossing or beveling to create 3D logos.
