Hey, I'm kinda new to the whole photoshopping thing, but my brother was really interested in it so I'm checking it out. I have some color pictures, and I was wondering if it was possible to make most of the picture black and white, while other parts stay in color. I've found some tutorials using the channel mixer, and calculations and stuff like that to make them b&w and I'm comfortable with that. Are there ways I can leave certain parts of pictures (like a sweater, or hair) in color? Thanks guys. |

If you search this forum you'll find lots of ways...for a beginner I'd use:
Pick a black brush and set the mode to color.
Paint everything you want BW with the black brush.

Go to Image >> Adjustments >> Hue/Saturation then toggle your saturation until your image is black and white then click on your History brush tool and brush over whatever you want in color. If that doesnt work check your history window and make sure the default snapshot has the little history brush icon next to it. Im doing this on CS2 |

The way I do it is as follows.
Go to the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" button at the bottom of the layers pallet. Its the one that looks like a circle, with one side white and the other black.
Choose "Hue/Saturation from the list. A box will pop up with Hue Saturation and lightness slide bars.
Move the slide bar for saturation all the way to the left, which is the middle slider. This will make the picture black and white. Hit ok.
In the Hue/saturation layer which has just appeared, use a black brush and paint on the mask where you would like the colour.
Its easy.
