Hey folks, I'm having a little trouble.

Say I want to use the accented edges filter on a circle. When I try this, if the circle is on a transparent layer, the filter has no effect at all, but when i fill the background with a color, the effect works fine. Why doesn't it work with transparency?

thanks much!

The filter has no action to perform, you've only selected an object to start creating something. Until you fill it with a color, image, gradient. Whatever you choose than it will run the filter on that selection. Hope that helps.

Heres a screen shot on what you might have seen.

Does the circle have its own layer and the "transparent background" have its own layer?

Can you post a screen shot?

I was able to achieve this without any errors. Maybe I am missing something?

Hmmm, and you cannot run the filter. Bizarre. I tried the same thing and what you did and I was able to achieve the effect. I see your on 8-bit RGB mode.

I guess my next question is can you run any of the other filters?

Some work, some don't

for example: gaussian blur works (though the effect is somewhat low-quality looking, maybe cause of 8-bit mode), and so does noise (inside the circle, not outside), but color halftone, crosshatch, stuff like that do not.

ok, i figured out what the problem is. the effect works, BUT photoshop fills the rest of the shape with the background color for some reason. example, when i try to use accented edges:

Probably way off here but could it have something to do with you having white as your foreground colour instead of black?

You are trying to do things to a black circle. most of the filters will have very little effect on it.
If you blur a black circle the edges will go soft but nothing happens to the center etc.

Place a picture in the circle or fill the circle with a gradient.. make sure the layer isn't locked (your last image shows the layer is locked, little lock on the right) it should work.
