How do you go about taking the background out of a picture. I want to get rid of the background from there and replace it with a different background. Any help is appreciated. (I've attached the picture.)

Use paths.

No extraction method in the world will be as clean. It's a cartoon, luckily with definite outlines, better for the pen tool to trace.

Yeah, that one's a toughy. The background almost blends with the art.

You can use Filter-Extract, which works pretty good in some cases.

Or, you can try the magic wand at about 32, highlight, use similar, keep smacking with the shift key and the wand until you're somewhat satisfied, then use the lasso, hold down alt key and un-highlight those areas you don't want highlighted. Then, of course, delete. Make sure you have transparency on and that the original pic is a layer (lest you fill the deleted area with your background color default.

I agree with thehermit though, Pathing it will be cleaner.
