I have been using Photoshop on PC for about 8 years. (self taught) mainly to support my custom paint business. We have recently purchaced a wide format digital printer and we are looking to expand on the digital design work. Before i upgrade to CS2 from 7, i would like some feedback from users in the industry as to the benefits of MAC over PC, if there are any these days? |

I use a PC for everyday Photoshop work..I've had to work on a MAC ever so often out of my work place.
I really don't know what the big hoopla is about, It's not any better or worse...it seems a little less user freindly, but I it probably just what I'm used to.

MAC definitly is the better when it comes to graphics works with photoshop. I personally use a mac simply because the hardware is better suited for the work I do. _________________ AIM: pbkev1npb

What does it do that makes it better for graphic?
I've worked on both..(admit to being very limited on the Mac), but I don't see it...
I'm not looking for a MAC/PC war, just for the reason MAC users feel the MAC is better equiped for graphics.

The GUI to the MAC looks "graphicly inclined" vs. PC windows xp.
I'm on a G5 at school, & at home I've built my own PC (AMD 3200+64bit) 2GB ram, etc.etc.) and I swear by my PC.
It boots up faster & runs better than the G5.
Just my 2cents. |

The reason i posed this question was that i believe i once heard that Photoshop was developed round the MAC format, and discussing it recently with a MAC specialist (though not in graphics) he said that they were recently shown with the new MAC's that it performed some tasks more than 10 times quicker.
This is all very well, but what i want to know is what are those tasks? My own personal feeling is that they are preaching to the converted to sustain the myth of what once was, but is no longer. More a marketing tool than real life.
I am prepared to re-format my business if i can be shown that overall it is more productive. But conversations like this just reinforce my opinion that MAC users may be living in the past. I have no problem with personal preference, i just want to know if we have reached the point where that is the difference between the two.
I guess the only way i will find out is if anyone can lend me a like for like MAC and PC and run them together. Any offers!!!!!! |

Photoshop was originally created around the MAC format so that is true. However the advantages the MAC had were that the architecture of the processors would process simple tasks quicker, and more complicated tasks much quicker, simply by the way it used its power, for example when I bought my G4 iMac, the processor was 800MHz but could run tasks as fast as a PC with 2GHz processors, running the same RAM. These days as MAC use intel, its kinda more equal. Personally, I find MACs much easier to use, their filing system is straight forward and you find things where to expect to find them, unlike PC where applications are scattered all over the system.
I guess the biggest advantage of MACS these days is the OS. Microsoft released Vista recently and that shows that they have only just caught up with Apple in the technology rankings, as all the "new features" in Vista can be found on previous versions of the MAC os.
Oh and MACS dont get viruses. I run a PC in the house as well as a MAC, and I have to shut down the PC everytime I stop using it to make sure it runs properly the next time. the MAC I just put to sleep and its fine. _________________ www.richardramsay.com |

I am wondering about this too. It use to be that the Mac was one big graphics card, so I'm told. Even tho they went Intel, is the rest of the architecture still better? Or is it a PC running MAC OS?
I know that even with a high end PC, large files are time consuming to add filters and effects, at least with CS and CS2. Task Manager/Processess will say PS is using 100 + megs of ram, but Task Manager/Performance shows a jump of 300 or more for the whole system.
Seems software more than makes up for processor improvement... |

I use both. I have an iMac G5 and an Intel Macbook dual boot running OSX Tiger and Windows XP. I don't find any difference in speeds, the Mac used to outperform PCs but now they are pretty equal. If anything I found the Mac opens files quicker and I prefer the look and feel of OSX over Windows. On the other hand you can get a lot more for your money when buying a PC so can spend that extra money on more memory etc. _________________ Barry Flammia

Thanks, i think i hold the same opinion as when i posed the question, but i now have an insight to other peoples attitudes. Deep inside i know i should get a MAC, but the benefits no longer outweigh the cost implications. Even though i know i will spend more on a PC, it will be more versatile. It'll be in the new year so keep the comments coming, as the fence i am currently sitting on is reasonably comfortable. |
