|
|
Dear friends:
I would appreciate your help with a technical hurdle beyond my limited skills, namely, converting a rasterized type layer back to an editable type layer.
I am close to completing my jewelry web site at:
http://www.immortalgems.com
Please click on Diamonds and Weddings.
This site is built on a template and that is why I cannot solve this issue myself by just redoing the section in question. I've been unable in any way to figure out how to edit the menu midway on the Diamonds page and on the Weddings page. As you can see there is a menu on the left (next to the little girl holding a gift box). This menu forms one single, uncut slice. Yet, it is a real menu, not a piece of decoration. I've tried my damnest to edit it following the instruction in the Photoshop manual and in Weinmann and Lourekas' Photoshop for Windows & Mac Visual Quickstart Guide. Am I mistaken or is this not a menu that is supposed to be edited? If so, how in the world can this be done. Please see screenshot at:
http://www.websher.net/temp/PS1.jpg
http://www.websher.net/temp/PS2.jpg
Please look closely at the first entry on the menu. You can see the marks left by the attempted highlighting of the text. What I saw looked like the cropping tool, not a highlight. Yet, the T text tool is on as well as the layer in the Layer palette.
If you would like to look at the original PSD file, it is at:
http://www.immortalgems.com/original/PSD/4.psd
Be sure to hold the Shift key when downloading.
Apparently, the author of the template had mistakenly rasterized the menu type layer. How do I UNrasterize it or how do I recreate an edited version of this type layer? Please note that the menu is part of the huge slice that concludes this PSD page.
Can you help me understand what I should do or perhaps suggest a tutorial online where I can find out how to do it. My problem is that I don't fully understand the problem and I don't know how to proceed.
Hope you can help.
Thank you so much.

If you are referring to the text being rasterized, that's all she wrote. I suggest copying a vertical strip from the left side of the buttons and stamping it across all that text. Because their is a gradient purple, that's pretty much your only choice for cleaning up the text and starting over with vectored text.
If i misunderstood, by all means clarify. |

Nevermind my earlier post, i just checked out your website and the PSD. The layer, "mid left text" is merely a placeholder, as are some of the other layers with 'text' in the label. Use your html developer program to create the text as links. Do not use photoshop for the text, except on logos and buttons. |

Dear White Warlock:
My thanks for your kind help. This might be a breakthrough. Here is what I did:
I hid the MID LEFT TEXT layer in Photoshop. I then sliced the new PSD file, saved it under a new name and then saved it for the Web in HTML and images. Here is a screenshot of the PSD file:
http://www.immortalgems.com/temp/Menu1.jpg
You can see the results online at:
http://www.immortalgems.com/diamonds-1.html
The PSD file for this page is at:
http://www.immortalgems.com/temp/4b.psd
Now the question is: how do I recreate the menu so that each button or entry is a hyperlink? You said that I should Dreamweaver but I don't see how I can write text on the type layer. Please see the "jewelry" menu with red buttons at the top of each page of my site: the buttons are hyperlinks but not the text. Is this the way I am supposed to do it?
Thank you so very much.

Dear friends:
OK, I've decided to cut the Gordian knot of this issue by:
1) removing the menu in question altogether
and
2) expanding the table width of the purple menu to span the entire width of the page. I think I succeeded. It looks seamsless and the margins are just right.
3) Adapting the "jewelry" menu with red buttons at the top for each page. The only way I could do it and make it look good was to slice the original 2.psd file (from which I took this menu), then change "jewelry" in Photoshop to "Diamonds", then save the psd file for the Web. I then replaced the top part of the menu with the new slice. This allows me to change the rest of the menu itself in Dreamweaver, as can be seen on my Diamonds page at:
http://www.immortalgems.com/diamonds.html
I will then adapt this same menu for Weddings. I think that this may be a better solution than trying to correct the rasterized menu with purple buttons on my earlier Diamonds and Weddings pages.
ONE PROBLEM:
If you view this page with Netscape 7 or Mozilla or Opera, everything looks just right. But if you view it with IE, there is a tiny but very visible horizontal gap between the top slice of the "Diamonds" menu with red buttons and the slice right below it. May I ask if you can help me resolve this little nuisance. If I can fix this flaw, then my site should be ready at last for the public. I tried to play with Dreamweaver but could not figure out how to do it. I tried first to put the horizontal image in a table but it just didn't work out so I just put it as an image link. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Dear friends:
Problem solved by putting the <img src> code and the table code that follows it on the same line and removing the white space between them.
Thank you.
