I am trying to take an image off a background so when I put it on any coloured background on a webpage, , it will just have what ever colour the webpage is. I have tried using the extract tool but it doesn't seem to work, when I put the image on a blue background, I have a right square around the image.

If you are saving the file as a jpg it won't work. Jpeg does not allow transparency, you'll need to save as a gif or png file.

The path tool is your friend here, click around your image, I find the extract tool quite frustrating to use, it never creates exactly the cut you want, then as Lasa said make sure you save as a gif.

Theres a few questions here, are you saving the cut out part after extracting it? as lasa say you have to save it as a PSD to keep the background transparent.
The easiest way is to have both images open then you can just select the part you want and copy it, then click on the background image and paste it.
The trick with the extract tool is to overlap the edge both sides a bit (dont just go around the outside) this way you can use the tools in preview to reconstruct and clean up the edges, it can do a half decent job, even of things like hair (heres a very quickly done shot to show) Wayne
