-Select the are you want black
-Press D. THis sets black as your foreground colour and white as your background colour.
-Press Alt-Backspace, which fills the selection with black
Making the selection is probably the trickiest part. How yous elect depends on what kind of image you've got.

I don't think I understand what you are trying to do?
Are wanting to extract the figure to be able to place it on another background? (see attached, extracted and mounted on a blue backdrop)
or are you trying to highlight the figure?

yeah thats awesome.. i was looking to either black out the image.. but white lines to define liek the motor and all taht.. but that works much better to keep the color? is it possible to get that same pic you did.. with a white only background? thats amazing how you did that.. im trying to figure out how to do things like that.. great job!! i would love to have that in my logo with just a white background with the image cut out like that.. thanks

I like to use the quick-mask tool.
Look it up in your PS help and/or search this forum (also know as q mask)
I'm not being lazy its just that others have explained it a lot better then I'll ever..lol
(You can also look up extractions should help)
Good luck,
Lasa
