How do I get the cool effect underneath the shapes... like the faded smokey stuff

I'm not that sure... Try twinkin with the blurs ... Another thing you can try is inserting the pic but larger. Then turn the opocity down a bit.

I Agree with Masta.
Duplicate the "flame" layer, resize it to a larger size, do a gaussian blur with a radius of about 6.0, then reduce the opacity to about 40%. Don't forget to put the blurred flame layer underneath the non-blurred layer.
