I have this photo with a nice bright background, but the person in the photo is dark and you can't really see the face. How would fix it up to make the person's face bright enough to see?

you could try image > adjustemnts > brightness and contrast. That is a quick and easy way to get it looking prety good.

if you want to dive into deeper waters, you could use image > adjust > levels, which requires a bit more knowledge. The one mroe option is image > adjustments > curves, which requires you to read and understand a fair amount.

Any questions aboutt hese commands can probably be asnwere by photoshop' help, type in "levels" or "curves".

If you have CS or CS2 theres a shadow/highlight control, that will do a better job. Wayne

(It might be in elements 3 or 4???)

As well with the above mentioned.
You should also check out 'levels' & 'curves'
Stay away from the 'auto' feature with levels,
experiment with the manual.
These along with what swanseamale47 suggested
'shadow/highlight' are my favorite image adjustment features.
