im new to photoshop and all its tools so im doing the tutorials, at the moment im trying to do this one http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorial/Funky-background-and-photo-outline/14468
i can do all the layers and everything but when i try and click on the black transparent background to put my photo on (in picture 4) i can not get the black transparent background how can i make this appear?

Too Confusing to answer. Are you trying to say you can't get your background gradient to appear?

when i click the 2 layers that i have (one is photo, one is transparent background) the picture just stays there it doesnt go to the transparent background that i want to paste my photo i just cutted out of the picture. |

You should be able to drag the photo onto the transparent background by clicking the move tool holding down the left mouse botton and draging the photo onto the background (have both images open for this), or by selecting the photo part then edit copy, click anywhere on the transparent background and go to paste. I think I understand now.
If you are trying to combine the two
-=-Cut out image
and
-=-Transparent background
it's going to be the same. So, There is no need for that.
To do this tutorial right, you must have the Cut Out image above the blank layer. To do so, you drag the Image layer above the blank one.
Then you click on the blank layer, and click gradient which is in the same button as the bucket. Just press and hold down and selete Gradient. Then pick a color and drag on the file. If it colors the whole layer and the image seems to disappear. That means you need to drag the photo above the background gradient so that the picture won't disappear.

You don't need two files to be opened up
1. First you open your picture
2. Double click on the word background [ name of layer ] and click
okay. It will now be named layer 0
3. Click New layer at the bottom of the layers optional box.
4. Drag the Layer 1 under layer 0
5. Click back to layer 0
6. Use the pen tool and cut out the image
7. Click on the eye next to the layer 0 picture
8. Click on layer 1
9. Click gradient, to get gradient, hold on the bucket and selete gradient
10. Pick a set and drag on the image
11. Click on the eye of the layer 0
12. And you should see the picture above the background with no problems.
