make a phrase a pattern, use the fill to put it in, and then make a new layer, gradient tool with the colors you want, then blend mode -> color.

my text pattern is horrible, its not repeating the whole way across, its just in one spot, i could get it to repeat but i have to create a new layer and move it manually for every word, surely theres an easier way...?

Give this technique a stab, much as what Haunus was suggesting, but with a twist.

1. Create a new document, what ever size you like, with a transparent background.
2. Create some text, in the size that you want your pattern.
3. With the rectangular marquee tool, select the text.
4. Edit/Define Pattern
5. Create a new layer (clear any selection you may have Cmd/Ctrl+D)
6. Paint bucket-Pattern and select your newly created pattern.
Now if you want to color it, lock the transparency of the layer, in the layer palette. Pick a gradient and go nuts.

Here's a little visual.

If he is in to doing this, there is one thing you fogot to mention and that is how to make the text appear like it is hidden in some spots and revealed in other spots or MASKING. Big Grin
