Building a base with monochromatic (grey scale) colors is a very affective when painting in photoshop. Starting with only four layers, 50% grey as the background, a layer just for the shadows, another layer for the highlights, and also a layer for the color.
When having the shadows and lights on different layers, you have much more freedome in adjusting the composition however you like to. you can darken or lighten the layers to give the painting more lighting etc.
For the color, i usually set the blending mode on the layers pallet to "overlay" and then paint with a 100% opacity brush. By having the colors on a seperate layer, i can adjust not only the saturation, contrast etc, but i can also change the colors...
anyway give this a try it is of fun to do. i think of it as though im sculpting. but instead of molding it with tools, im molding with lights and darks untill i achive the depth i am looking for
i hope this breaks new ground with some of you.
