The girls head has been cut out from it's original background and then dragged onto of the background you see there, theres a bit of masking going on to soften the edges as well it looks like. Wayne

personally... i dont like the background, image, text placement, or anything... BUT... yeah want to know how to do it.

you will have 3 layers, the background, the image, and the text. the text will be on top, image in the middle, and background in the back. with the middle (lady imgage) selected, create a layer mask. Then get a soft, black brush, and paint where you want the background to show through. You can reverse it by painting white. You can also change the opacity of the brush. After this, put all your text.

doesn't even look like they used a brush. probally the same 3-layer layout as mentioned before, but use a gradient on the layer mask for the image of the woman. shouldn't take more than 10 minutes for the whole job.

The first step is to extract the womens head from it's background, theres a few ways of doing this, check out the lasso tool and the extract tool etc. once you have the head without any background, then make your new background (I used blue/white here) now with the move tool, just drag the head onto the new background, use free transform to resize if needed.
Next step on the layers palette check your on the head layer and click the add layer mask button on the bottom of the palette, now get your brush tool with a nice big soft brush and paint black down the side of the face, it hides it and shows the background through, paint white if you want to bring back the detail you just painted out (thats the beauty of a layer mask) Wayne
