I was wondering would anyone be able to help explain how to do this.
This was the origanal image:


and then it ended up like this in the finished design:


would anyone care to explain how to take real life pictures and sort of turn them cartonnish style, haha hope i have explained well enough, any help would be appriciated.

yup, there are many ways. You can trace over the image with the pen tool, or use a combination of filters and such.
