New to photoshop CS2 and I am trying to use some filters...

I create new file, add 1st layer, pick colors on color pallette, and try to do difference clouds or halftone pattern and i get an error message saying that nothing is selected. I click on the layer in the layers pallette to be sure that the layer is selected, and it still won't work. Is there something special i need to do? i know in older versions, you could just use the filter...

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Heidi

Aren't you forgetting you have to fill in the empty layer with either 50% grey in overlay mode or white with mulitply mode or black with screen mode to make it work? A layer NEEDS something to fill the filter in, in order for it to work. Wheater it be noise or what have you. An empty layer has no meaning. some filters you can get away with like clouds because clouds are what is called fillers. They fill in the layer with their filter.

Hope that helps. PLAY PLAY PLAY to see what filters work and what do not.
