How do I delete preferences in PSCS?
And what exactly will I lose? _________________ and the wisdom to know the difference... |

As you launch PS hold down the Shift+Alt+Cntrl keys (Shift+Opt+Cmnd on a Mac). You'll get a dialog to delete settings. |

I think you could lose some Actions (other than the default ones), depending where they were saved.
Why do you want to trash your prefs? |

Well, once in a while, a tool quits working..I'll be erasing a background for instance, all of a sudden the eraser won't work any more..It will work on another image, but not the one I'm working on..
I can then save and close the image and reopen it, and the eraser works on it again..
It does this sometimes with the clone tool, or a brush..
It's not a big problem, but I've read that deleting preferences is a sort of maintenance..But maybe I should leave well enough alone!

If a tool “quits working”, first check its option bar. Make sure it has Normal mode, and Opacity and Flow are set right. If option bar looks ok, then go Select>Deselect to make sure you don’t have a few pixels selected somewhere, preventing your tool from working.
If nothing is selected, check the Layer you are working on, make sure mode is Normal, Transparency is not locked and Opacity is correct.
THEN, if those fail, try trashing your prefs.
If you are using a communal computer (like in a classroom), I'd make trashing prefs a habit. |

It's just me using the computer..Making name tags, mostly animated, is my hobby..Dh is retired, and I found a wonderful pass time with the computer..
Also with PhotoshopCS..I love playing with this program..I belong to a couple psp sig tag groups, but I use Photoshop exclusively..
I've never worked with actions..You mentioned above there are some default actions? hmmm..Is there a basic tutorial or explanation about how to use them? _________________ and the wisdom to know the difference... |

The Help File will tell you quite a bit about using Actions. A good basic book on PS will cover actions. (I like Adobe Classroom in a Book, Studio Techniques by Willmore and Photoshop 0ne-on-One by McClelland.) |

OK..Thanks cbad..I'll check out the help file..
I have Classroom and I have PS6 Bible..They were a little hard to understand in the beginning..Most of the stuff I've learned by playing around, reading sites like this one, etc..there is something new every where I look!
thanks again! _________________ and the wisdom to know the difference... |

Look on actions as a sort of recording of steps, you can make your own, recording the steps taken to create say, for example a soft focus sepia picture, then play it back on any other image to obtain the same effect of sepia etc.
You can also download thousands of free actions to make all kinds of effects, from say a simple sepia to very complicated effects and adding borders etc etc etc!
I use them mainly for the repetitive jobs, for example I have one that resizes a duplicate of my main image, adds a border, then adds a thin black line around the border ready for website use, very handy if your doing 30 or 40 pics (and saves ages doing it manually) Wayne |
