Hello, I need help for a project in my Imagine Manipulation class...

The girl has a bunch of snow on her booties and other parts of her clothing, so I thought..to make the same effect I would do the same with the penguin.

(what I've tried): I made a layer mask of snow and pasted it behind the penguin, so via quick mask I can add snow and such. But it still looks bad, I tried going pixel by pixel to take out pieces of snow and blurring it but still doesn't look good.. and dodge and burn effects it too much..

Maybe I just need to take more time on my old ideas..but do you guys have any ideas or techniques to get the penguin to look like it has snow on the lower part of it's body?

Have you tried cloning bits of snow onto the penguin?

Yes, I have tried that. I tried cloning the snow off of the girl's boot...but came off looking a little goofy. Maybe I can try cloning it at a size 2 or 4 stamp.... And maybe... feathering it or blurring it afterwards?

Only problem I've had with cloning is that I have to merge my images when I do it. Everytime I tried cloning it it wouldn't come up on the penguin.

Is there a way to get around that without merging the pictures?

Thanks!

Actually I was thinking to use the clone with a grunge style brush. Then you could clone the snow itself...tried it and it looked ok.
You can click the clone tool on the original picture and clone it to a blank layer. That way you don't cause any damage if you don't like it.

I like this more...

Opened a blank layer above the original. Then made a one pixel medium soft brush with a 730% spacing and a 531% both axes scatter and went around drawing in the snow specs..kept eyedropping for dif. snow color tones of white / gray.

The at the end added a 1 px blur to make it sinking blend in.

It has potential.

Holy crap. That looks damn good... I'm sure to get an A if I do that.

I'll try it out and see what happens. Thanks.
