Check your set to 100% opacity and normal mode on the top toolbar. Wayne

Are you working on layers? do you have a selection open? Try making a new document, say 2x3 inches rgb colour 300ppi white background, then try using the brush and pencil tools, checking the mode and opacity and see if that works. Wayne

just a silly thought your not trying to write with the background colour by mistake?

Do you mean nothing shows? Or it is shades of gray, not color?
What other tools do you mean?
Might help to post a screen shot.

And have you tried what Wayne suggested:
Create a new RGB doc and try painting on that.

i tried creating anothr document and that doesnt change anything.

what i mean by it doesn't show is that there is nothing visable on my document but my history shows that i've been painting. this only happens with the paint and pencil tools and i've checked my opacity and it's at 100%

Mode is Normal? Flow is 100%?

Then trash your preferences.
