I am a skinner for a Sims 2 fansite, and I create clothing textures using Photoshop CS2. I used to use Photoshop 7.0, and always loved the results I would get with the tools I utilized the most, (blend, smudge, dodge and burn, etc.) Since I started work on a dress with a patternless skirt, I have been noticing that the blended areas of my textures do not appear soft, as they did in my old version. The transition from a light area to a shadowed one looks very pixellated and harsh, even when I use the smudge and blend tools. Everything is at the default settings, which is how I have always kept it. This problem makes it impossible for anything to look softly blended (unless it is patterened) which is an absolute must for the work that I do. I have lost about two months of work due to this, and am very nervous that If I dont do something quickly, I could be in trouble. I never fiddled with any of the settings, so I dont understand why everything looks different. My monitor is the same as the one I was using before, and I can't think of anything that would be causing this other than some hardware setting. I have spent countless hours looking through them, and not findng anything that made any difference.

Just for reference, I am viewing the same texture any time I try new options. Then when I change the options, I use the smudge tool to see if the resuts are different.

Five months ago, I got a new video card, and three months ago, I upgraded the rest of the computer. About a month ago, I upgraded to CS2. I have been on many other forums in search of help, as well as seeking help from other people that do the work that I do, and can't find a way to assist me. Most of the advice I recieved had to do with the pixels per inch, 8 bit vs 16 bit color, or the settings of my video card, none of which seemed to make a difference with my old version, (7.0) on my old computer. I am inclined to think it must have something to do with this computer in particular, because I have viewed the same texture on other computers, and it has been fine, once I used the smudge or blend tool to correct it.

I am honestly at my wits end, I dont understand why this would be happening, and havent a clue how to fix it. I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone out there can help me with this. I would be grateful beyond words. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

8 bit vs. 16-bit colour can be an issue, but 8-bit colour should stil look great. When photoshop says 8-bit, it means 8 bits per channel, which is reallt 24 bits, planty good enough.

Youmay have something funky in your brushes. Go to the brush options and make sure the spacing is all the way down. it may help a bit more if we could see an example. i'm having trouble teling if the problems come in when you're blending between layers or just when brushing/burning/dodging on one layer.

The spacing? Hmm.. I'll check it out. But I'm not sure if I know what you mean.

hmm, I see your problem. Doesn't look like it's related to spacing at all, and I don't have nay further suggestions. In that image you linked, 8-bit colour isn't causing the problem.

Cry I understand, thank you very much for your quick response, and original suggestion. This is a very serious issue for me, and I am truly desperate to get it fixed, I would be grateful beyond measure if you might be able to direct someone to this thread that may have the answer.

Thanks again.

i noticed while fooling around that the dodge/burn tools do not like to be used repeatedly in the same place. if I click repeatedly in one place the resulting burn or dodge has rings around it, which look kind of like a sun flare. if I kept it moving, though, these didn't appear.

I'm afraid I can't think of anyone else who could help you. I would suggest that you pose the question on a forum for the skinning/game modding community.
