Hey everyone, I'll be in need of a new computer soon and I was wondering what everyone out there is using. I'm still debating on whether or not I will purchase a laptop or desktop. I'm also curious to know if any of you would be able to explain to me the advantages of having a mac over windows. Does anyone have any suggstions on what I should get, I'm really big into gaming and music so take those into consideration, I wouls also like to keep it under $1,800 :).

I'm a big Mac fan. And with the new Macs having Intel Core Duo chips, you might see more games available. Macs are very well built and a great design IMHO. As of now viruses and spyware is not an issue. And the interface I think is much nicer than PC. Even beta copies of Winow's new Vista I've seen are not as nice as the Mac OSX 10.4.

And Photoshop is cross-platform upgradable through Adobe Customer support.

But that said... the new Mac/Intel computer is a major transition. It may be awhile for software developers to come out with programs to run natively. The "Rosetta" feature in the new Macs, allowing older PowerPC software to run, exhibits a substantial performance drop when running the older programs.

I've got an eMachines that runs fine, but for your price range I would suggest something much better. I think you might actually do well to build your own using above standard hardware. What kind of HD space are you looking for? How about processor capability? RAM? As far as laptop vs. desktop, it depends on your environment. Where will you be using the computer most?

Actually ,I hate the interface of Macs, but thats all prefrence, I really dont like windows either....in the end I think we're just doomed to feel disappointed, really what you want to look at is performance, which computer will better suit your style, PCs will be better for games and such (though upon reading some of the posts perhaps Macs will catch up...) but Macs are better for the designer inclined...or so they say, personally I would just do some research...

Get an AMD 64. I don't know anything about how much better they really are depending on the application, but I've heard they're blazing fast. And get a LOT of RAM. RAM is good.

I'm about to build my own windows system. I'll be spending somewhere around $1300. The cpu I'm getting is the AMD Opteron 165, it's a 1.8 gig dual core that can be over clocked to perform just as good as the AMD fx-60, so I've head from several people. Also I'll have 2 gigs of ram and the nVidia 7800 video card. All of that is high performance hardware.

So with the money your looking to spend you could build almost the perfect pc. I shop at www.newegg.com they have the best prices.

I have heard that PC's with Intel P4's will be getting a lot cheaper soon, it seems that Intel are pulling out of the home PC market (so I'm told by a reliable tech) as I understand it thay can't make a 64 bit chip (profitably?) or something like that, so you may be able to pick up one cheaper soon, where this will leave the spares situation I don't know. I have heard that PC world are allready selling off their stock of P4 based PC's.

Bare in mind this is not confirmed yet. Wayne
