That tool is supposed to erase to transparency (checkerboard). Don’t know why it was painting white the first time. Just use it then go Layer>Flatten Image.

The ordanary eraser will erase to white, and the background eraser will erase to a checkerboard patten (transparancy) Interestingly if you use the ordenary eraser AFTER using the background eraser that erases to checkerboard as well, I don't know why it does that, anybody know?? Wayne

When you use the Background Eraser, it overrides any locks on a layer. (Use the Background Eraser on a locked Background Layer, and you’ll see it change to “Layer 0”.)
After that happens, the regular Eraser Tool paints transparent pixels instead of white pixels.

Never knew that 'til I tried it out today!

Well you learn something every day! Thanks Chadland, I didn't know it unlocked the layer, I didn't spot that.

Thanks Wayne,

LEARN HOW TO USE LAYER MASKS - they are ALLOT EASIER to use, and you CAN always UNDO your "erasers". You will see what I mean when (or if) you get into it - you will THANK ME for this - trust me!
