can any of you tell me how this is done, the edges i mean of the two character, the squares.

To your first question. If you have a texture of squares, you can overlay it with these figures and have a similar effect.

Second question: looks like it was duplicated on a seperate layer, darkened (brownish). This dark layer was then put as a soft light layer over the original layer.
