I have a photo. In the photo is a large object. I'd like to turn that object into a silhouette and discard the rest. The object is irregularly shaped. What to do? Thanks!

Select the object using one of the selection tools or quick mask..then open a blank layer and fill the selection with black.

That made absolutely no sense, sorry. I tried as you suggested and all that happened is that everything turned transparent red. On top of that, the object isn't a uniform shape. There's lots of angles and such, so it's not like I can just draw a box around it. Maybe I'm thinking too much, but it's a photo. The pixels of the object mean something to me but are just more pixels to Photoshop. Is there a way to define them, by contrast, color...something?

If the object contrasts well from the background, the magic wand tool might select it (then fill as Lasa said) if it's not a very good contrast then there are other ways of doing it,quick mask, extract tool, pologonal lassoo tool, select colour range etc.
It might help us to advise if you could post the shot so we could see whats needed as we don't know the colours shapes contrast etc, so we are guessing really. Wayne

Hi,
I rephotographed it so there would be some contrast to work with. I probably need 2 versions, one with it removed from the background intact and one of the silhouette. The bipod also needs to be there.
Sorry for being a pain...I've used various versions of PS for years, but only for resizing and cropping pics for my website...though I did somehow manage to stumble my into making the background graphic for my site's imagemap, still in use today, almost 10 years after I made it. Anyhow, here's a link to the new photo. It's way too large for me to want to post here. Thx.

Used the senseless quick mask to make the selection then filled with black...

So...tell me how you did it? I looked in the help file under Quick Mask last night, followed it's instructions. And got nowhere other than to turn everything transparent red as I stated before.
If you'd show me the steps, I'd understand what's going on.
Looks outstanding, BTW. TWO thumbs up!

You press quick mask tool (black square with white circle inside) and paint with a black brush. it show up as a transparent red. Paint it over the entire rifle. Once everything is painted with the transparent red.
Then you press the Edit in standard mode (white square with white circle beside the quick mask) and it turns everything you painted red into a selection..now you can add a new layer and fill with black. If you notice that you made a mistake simply press the quickmask again and use black paint to add more (transparent red) and a white brush to remove the red.

I managed to get the exact opposite of what I wanted. Here's the test I ran, following your instructions to the letter.

Sorry...Once you have the selection invert it (select / invert)... tracing it closely is a lot of work..but you get better with practise.
You can also use the Polygonal selection tool or the pen tool each has its +/-..
