I need help with using graphics. If you make a document in photoshop (please note: it's not a photo, but a scanned drawing) and then making some alterations on it... (adding text etc...) Then when I try to put this document in Illustrator or InDesign, the resolution and quality is horrible...
Please help. I've tried to save as a .jpeg, .gif, .tiff... I've tried to create a bitmap out of it (which was the worst method ever!)
How do I transfer photoshop documents to Illustrator and InDesign with great resolution and quality?

Don’t Drag-n-Drop or Copy-n-Paste.
Use the Place Command. File>Place
And, InDesign does not by default show you a high quality preview. You have to go View>Display Performance>High Quality. |

How did you scan it in? Was it on an automatic setting or did you manually set it for like 200dpi? Reason being is that some scanners will drop the quality of a scan if it sees a black and white scan because it thinks its text, even though it may be a drawing. If it scanned it at a low dpi, this might be part of the problem. First, I'd check what cbadland said, seems like the best place to start.

I have been using the 'place' function for importing art. But the scans are scanned in at 350 dpi. It is strange, because I have tried different methods of scanning as well, and although they are b&w sketches, it seems the cleanest approach to scanning was to scan it in as a color image (using the epson scanner software)... Otherwise the images were jagged and rough. I understand that this software is made for photos, but am unable to scan into Illustrator (as far as I'm aware.)
So, I imported the scanned document, and would preferably like to add text to it, in Illustrator, but when I "place" the document in Illustrator it looks like crap. If you have any advice please let me know... It seems like the same platforms would be able to communicate with one another easier than this.
Thanks for the InDesign tip. I will check that out right away!!!

How large is the artwork you are scanning? (Scanning in Color or Greyscale is good. Don't use the 1-bit Black and white seting)
How does the image differ from viewing it in Photoshop compared to viewing the Placed image in AI? |

the images are letter-sized sketches of garments that need callouts attached to them. When viewing it in Illustrator after modifying it in photoshop, it seems pixelated... Rough, the lines aren't clean or smooth.

When you view at 100% in Photoshop (double click on the Zoom Tool icon in the Toolbar), does it still look diffferent? |

The scanned image in photoshop... Looks o.k. good enough... Then I alter it, and try to pop that image in Illustrator and it looks bad, no matter if it's zoomed in 200% or not.

In Photoshop. Zoom percent means different things in the two programs. Also, are you using recent versions? Like CS or CS2
You could try trashing your prefs of both programs (hold down Shift+Alt+Cntrl while launching applications; you'll get a dialog to reset settings.) |

Thanks for the InDesign knowledge. wow... That just re-inforces the fact that I love these online forums. One other question.
Saving anything (any file extension .jpg, .tiff etc..) in Illustrator and then bringing that same image into photoshop. That image looks horrible!!! why? Is there some sort of Display Performance option in this program as well? Or a method to bring in Illustrator images into Photoshop? help.
