How do I create a DVD/CD LABEL????

Hi all,

I am trying to create a DVD/CD cover to actually go over the DVD/CD disc itself. I have tried with the elipse tool but thats it i cannot go any further as when i draw the inner ring and the outer ring the inner ring disappears but i have 2 layers showing the inner and outer ring. aaarrgghhhh. Also when i come to print this from photoshop cs2 which list do i choose as i cannot find the cd/dvd listing.

There are lot of softwares which can be downloaded from google.. All u got to do is search for a software in google say "CD cover maker" something like that...u can download it ... it gives u standard CD formats on it. it gives u lot of options with different CD cover styles and stuff..

So, basically you want to make a sort of teplate in the shape of a disc that you can put graphics on? Should be easy.

1- make an image at desired ppi, with the width and height the same as the diameter of a disc.

2- use the pen ellipse tool and drag a circle from top corner of image to bottom corner. Fill on a new layer.

3- Measure inner circl, and make guides that will frame it. Then it will be easy to draw an ellipse following those guides.

4- convert path to selection, and hit delete. Now you've got a layer in the shape od a disc.

5-select the layer and delete everything in it. Invert the selection. Fill it. Now just keep the layer at the top of the stack and it'll hide anything outside of the disc.

I hope it helps. ( I HAVE done it and I KNOW it works, even if it sounds a bit vague).

maybe you could be more detailed as to what part of the instrucions you're having difficulty with.

I'll just point out how to do a few little things:

In this case the easiest way to make a guide is to activate the rulers (under view or ctrl-r I think). Then just click on the ruler and drag, and it'll drag a guide. if you want to move a guide later, use the move tool. To get rid of a guide, drag it back onto the ruler.

if you want ot make it ultra-easy to get the guides in the right spot, you could just scan a DVD, but MAKE SURE you scan at the SAME PPI AS PRINT, or you'll screw yourself over big time.

I don't mind giving more details, just don;t want to ddo the entire thing if unecessary.

So there's two ways to start out with this:

You could just make a canvas the exact size of a CD. I'm not sure what it is, let's just pretend for fun it's 11 cm. So you'd make your canvas 11c, by 11 cm. You can use whatever dpi you want, but for the best print quality I'd go with 300.

I'd prefer to have a little breathing room, even if I do have to crop it down later, so I'd make my canvas 13cm by 13cm. Then I'd make 4 guides:
horizontal 1cm (or 300 pixels)
horizontal 12cm (or 3600 pixels)
vertical same distances.

That would make my outside guides.

Then I'd move onto inside guides.
It's too bad I left my template I made at school or I'd gladlt just post it.

Let's just assume because I don't know that the inside radius of a cd label is 3 cm. here the math gets a little tricky. Might want a calculator. it's always easiest to fraw a diagram.

11(or 13-2)-4/2=3.5.
therefore, you'd make your guides at 3.5cm and 7.5 cm, both horizontal and vertical.

hopefully you'll be able to redo the math with the right numbers yourselves, right?? Big Wink

Now to make the circles. You can use either the pen tool or the oval marquee. I think it'd be easiest to use a marquee. I might even lock i itno 1:1 ratio jut for fun.

make a new layer, filled with white.
drag the big coiircle, press delete.
drag the little circle, fill with white.

done. Was that really too hard? Just keep it on the top of your stack and it'll sort od "mask" off the shape of a CD.

Sorry to seem cranky, but I thought I'd explained pretty good first time.

What are you going to be printing on? if it's bought CD labels, you'll need to align the homemade template with the cut outs in the label sheet, when you print. Wayne
