Hi guys,

I need some career advice and would appreciate any harsh words or constructive opinions!

Currently(and for the past 5 years), I've been playing with Adobe PhotoShop and using it to create little graphics and wallpapers to "de-stress" myself from work.

However, recently, I've this idea about going professional. If I do, then I'll really go hardcore and learn all about graphics designing(from books) and 100% of how to ultilize PhotoShop fully.

However, I've a few questions :

1) Being an amatuer, I'm not shy to say that I can create nifty and sleek images(sleek, but not international-award-winning kinds). However, my weakest point is that I cannot draw/do illustrations. Like if you ask me to draw a simple cartoon or dragon, I'm totally stuck. I'm more into overall graphics design/presentation, if you know what I mean.

I've been thinking of being a freelancer and taking up freelance web graphics design projects(like those that ask you to create a set of buttons or banners. etc.). Is this a wise choice? By just staking everything on Adobe PhotoShop alone?

For the illustrations/cartoons part, I figure that I could hire a sub-contractor to do the work for me.

I'm intending to make a full-time career out of this in the future.

Thanks!
Xeon.

I can't offer much career advice, but I think it would definitely be a good plan to at least learn a bit about illustration. Even if you don't end up using the skills directly in your work, the principles you'll learn will help you with all aspects of Photoshop.

Learn 100% of how to utilize photoshop fully? That's a tall order in itself right there! Even the pros don't know "everything" about photoshop. Taking classes and reading tons of material on photoshop would most definately be a step in the right direction. Making a carreer out of it...well, not to sure about that. My best advice would be for you to find someone that does what you are thinking about doing and really talk to them to see what it's like. Then perhaps work for another company doing webdesign or what ever it is you'd like to get into. That will give you lots of experience and also help you to see how a business is run.

Other than that, just don't make and rash decissions and don't jump into anything! With that said, don't just give up either, if it's something you want to do, do it...just be careful about it!
