when i select a layer and try to move it. it automatically changes to the layer closest to the cursor, making it very hard to move text or small images. how do i change it back !

HELP ! PLEASE !

When you want to move something make sure you highlight (click) the prpper layer in the layer palette...then use the move tool...click / drag.

It helps me to always have the Bounding Box checked.

Also. make sure you have "Auto Select Layer" unchecked in the Move Tool option bar.
